Who are you?
I am Jesse Stills. I am from New Jersey. I went to school in western PA for
Criminal Justice. I work in security for a defense contractor in Virginia.
How did you get involved in NERO?
My friend brought me to a PRO (Pittsburgh Roleplaying Organization) event in
1992. I’ve been playing ever since.
What do you play when you play the NERO
LARP?
I have a couple player characters, but for the Royal Marines, I play Sergeant Des Mayjin of the First Tactical Regiment, Evendarr Royal Marines Training Battalion.
Were you ever in the military?
No, but I have a great respect for the military.
Why should I join the Royal Marines?
This is a great opportunity for players. The Royal Military is not new in NERO, but it
has not been recreated by PCs on a National scale until now.
What is expected of me?
Play NERO, stay with your team, obey orders, have fun.
What if I don't like orders or discipline?
You probably won't have very much fun with the Marines.
Will anyone be paying for me?
In game, troops will receive monthly pay. Plus, troops will receive
"training". Out of game costume, armor, weapons, and other equipment are your
responsibility. The cost of events and travel are also your responsibility.
What character will I play?
The class, race, magic school, and fighting style are all your choice; however,
you are forming a team,
so you should make sure you don't have five people who want to be Scholars.
Plus, there is no “usual” not only because each chapter is different. You
should "fit in" with your local campaign..
How much build will I have?
Like all starting NERO characters, a new character will have 30 build (65 experience).
What skills should I take?
It depends on the duty position you choose in your squad. If you are a fighter,
you are expected to do damage. If you are a healer, you are expected
to cast healing spells and/or make healing potions. There is a recommended
skills list in the character creation section below as
well as a description of squad positions.
What is the uniform?
While on duty, you wear the Royal Marine tabard. While off duty, you will
wear your normal costume. I am coordinating National Plot for a tabard design (11/4/03).
What else should I wear?
Your normal costume as long as it is appropriate for the weather and basic military decorum.
Who will be in charge?
Since the Royal Marine concept is still in development, it depends on how it
is set up with your local plot committee. Have your chapter's plot
representative contact me.
Are there ranks?
Yes, there are ranks in game. When you join, your title will be "Recruit."
How do I get promoted?
After your character has demonstrated a comprehension of responsibility, you
will advance. The deeper your understanding, the sooner you will be promoted.
What if I am already a noble?
Out of game, new characters (not necessarily players) are preferred in the Royal Marines.
How do I become an officer?
All players will begin at enlisted and non-commissioned ranks. There will be
NPC officers for the PCs to interact with. Depending on the level of interest,
we may set up a Royal Navy Academy for players.
Will I get medals?
If you excel in game, another player may be recommended for a medal to an NPC officer.
Is there in-game training?
The in-game military of Evendarr is still a medieval institution, so a character
would be lucky to receive any kind of training besides "on-the-job".
What are the rules?
There are general standing orders, but general codes of conduct are unwritten and enforced by your commanders.
What about a character from another Kingdom?
You must swear fealty to the King of Evendarr, King Mykel Endarr II thus you will be considered a subject to Evendarr.
Will there be roleplaying on the ocean?
Unfortunately, all of our roleplaying will be on shore.
To be part of the Royal Marines, you can be any of these: a brand-new new player,
an experienced player with a new character, or an experienced player with an
experienced character.
If you are an experienced player who is playing your experienced character, you
are expected to have a less aggressive playing style and be interested in
teaching new players how to play NERO.
"Good" character concepts are preferred, but you can be anything you want to be;
besides, everyone enjoys a good keelhauling.
The character must also have a personality that would make them successful in
a military environment -- which means discipline, orders, and standards. You
will measure yourself by these ideals as well as others.
Overall, all players should have most of the following qualities:
- Be willing to travel with the squad
- Be friendly
- Be reliable – you will be there when you say you will be there
- Be motivated – you don’t quit when it’s tough
- Be determined – you don’t always accept "No"
- Be flexible – recognize when no is the only answer
- Be energetic
- Be understanding
