Sir Robard Egmont

Lord Regent, Royal Academy of Arcane Arts & Sciences
Lord Steward of Janitria (a Royal Demesne)

Biography

Robard Egmont was born in 537 ER, in the Duchy of Rotaria in the Kingdom of Evendarr. His father was a Ducal Knight of Rotaria and so Robard grew up learning how to be a noble from a very young age. When Robard reached the age of sixteen he entered the service of the Duke of Rotaria as a Squire. Three years later he finished his squire ship and was knighted on midsummer’s eve, 556.

As a knight, Sir Robard distinguished himself in the Theren Conspiracy, earning great respect for his ability to decipher the truth of complex situations and act from wisdom and honor. Shortly thereafter, in the spring of 562, King Roderick II summoned Sir Robard to court and there elevated him to the position of Royal Knight of Evendarr, assigning him to investigate charges of corruption within the ranks of school administrators of the Royal Academy of Arcane Arts and Sciences.

Upon his arrival at the island, Sir Robard set to work immediately to ferret out the truth. With single-minded determination and an incorruptible spirit that refused bribes on numerous occasions, he was able to find proof that a number of school personnel were accepting vast sums of money from students to allow them to graduate without meeting college requirements. Six months after his arrival, twelve administrators, four teachers and two members of the 75th Assault Regiment had all been dismissed from service. As well, the Lord Regent at the time, Sir Cyrill Berethor, resigned in disgrace to retire to his family estate in Kitheria.

Sir Robard stayed on Janitria for an additional season to keep matters in hand until the new Lord Regent was appointed. With the assumption of Sir Derek Huntington, Sir Robard returned to Evendarr City to serve His Royal Majesty at court.

Ten years passed of loyal faithful service. Sir Robard continued to impress the nobility of Evendarr City with his dedication, loyalty, and ever growing political savvy. Then, in the autumn of 573, while traveling to visit outlying Baronies, His Royal Majesty’s party was ambushed on the road by the Blue Banner mercenary company. In a vicious battle the mercenaries were defeated, but not before assassinating many members of the Royal Court. Sir Robard, fighting at the side of His Majesty to keep him safe watched as a number of his friends were forced to seek resurrection when life spells ran out at the end of the battle. Thus, upon his return to Evendarr City, Sir Robard underwent the Spirit Forge Formal Magic to allow him to cast healing magics as well as fight upon the field.

Three years later, in 576, Sir Cyrill Berethor took ill and stepped down from the Stewardship of Janitria. Following his retirement, the Board of Lake Hollym governed Janitria for a year before His Royal Majesty appointed a new Steward and Regent. Sir Robard was requested to take up the reigns of Lake Hollym and in 577 took oaths to assume the vacancy.

Since that time, Sir Robard has ruled Lake Hollym with a keen political eye, excellent administrative skills, and a ruthless determination to keep the Academy and Guilds at the forefront of learning on the continent of Avalon. He does not tolerate any form of corruption within his domain and is known for his uncanny knowledge of everything happening in and around the island. When first taking his position, there was a time of adjustment to the unique challenges of ruling Lake Hollym, but that is long past. A fixture on the island now, Sir Robard is considered one of the most competent leaders to rule in centuries. His is the final word on all matters dealing with Lake Hollym and the guilds and he answers only to the King directly.

Recent Events

In the fall of 602, Sir Robard granted approval to the Arch Wizard Project. Following the recommendation of Dean Arcevol, Sir Robard appointed Asst. Guild master Derros Scrivener Starstone to head the project and begin the process of testing in and around the Kingdom of Evendarr.

More recently, early in 604, Sir Robard accepted the resignation of Brigadier Morran Bartholomew-Saneth as Commander of the 75th Assault Regiment. Promoted to a General of the Army, General Bartholomew has been reassigned to the King’s personal planning staff as the Dreadlands crisis looms.

Lord Trelayne fan Arcevol,

Dean

Royal College of Celestial Arts

After trying on numerous occasions to contact the good Lord, I have come to many dead ends. When he has a chance to contact me, I will record the interview and update the tomes so that all can revere his stories and how he came to be a Dean of the Royal College of the Celestial Arts and Sciences.

Mother Juarista, O.B.D.F.L.

Dean

Royal College of Healing Arts & Sciences

Mother Juarista was born forty-seven years ago in the Barony of Capulus to a loving mother and father. She was the youngest of their 4 children. Her siblings; Janice, Anna and Mitalus were ten, eight and three years older, respectively.

Juarista seemed to have been born older. Her eyes were always searching for something others could not see or perhaps wrap their minds around. It is not to say she was seeing spirits or that she was viewed as strange. Quite the contrary, actually. Her mind was always very grounded and she was frighteningly centered. Others always viewed her with a great deal of respect, even as a child.

Her father, Jacob, was skilled in healing and introduced Juarista to the arts. Juarista was the only one of the siblings who showed even the vaguest hint of aptitude for such a valued talent. Janice and Anna were the oldest of the four and therefore most of the burden of responsibilities of housework and finances fell upon them. Mitalus was a strong man, and was always very eager to learn to use the blade, but his skill with such was abysmal. His mother was fluent with a sword, though not widely noted for her skill, and instructed Mitalus as best she could. But he was hopeless to learn more than the rudimentary level of proficiency.

Juarista was the only exceptional child of the family. Her father tutored her diligently from the time she was five, and by her tenth birthday, she already outstripped her father in skill with the earth magics.

In the year 560, Juarista found herself in the halls of the Royal Academy, studying with the Masters of magic. She immediately fell in love with the Academy, learning every nook and cranny that was accessible to her. She was tireless, spending many nights under the personal tutelage of the instructors.

By the time she was twenty-four, her aptitude for learning the arcane arts had spread quietly throughout the Academy. It was whispered among the instructors that she might someday ascend to the position of Lady Regent of the Academy. The seriousness of her work was unparalleled and it would often unnerve many of the other students. Knowledge of her skills with earth magic had spread to the Courts of the Kingdom, and before her twenty-fifth birthday, it was requested that she assist the Duke of Volta as a personal healer to the Ducal Court.

Juarista seemed obsessive. Though she was kind and informed the Duke that his request was beyond gracious, she was unwilling to leave the Academy. She informed him personally that should he ever need assistance, she would be happy to provide him with such on a short term basis, but for her to leave the Academy for any long length of time was unacceptable.

Over the next few years, the Lord Regent took an interest in her. He inquired if she would like a position as an instructor. The board of Regents was very eager to see what she could do, and supported his interest. Juarista accepted the position humbly, and with an odd serenity.

In the next ten years, Juarista developed her own method of teaching. She was always rather methodical in her work, and because of this, she appeared to lack a level of compassion and empathy for her art. Others often considered her a little too cold in her mannerisms, but could not deny her skill. With her years as an instructor, that belief was reinforced.

Juarista had a unique view about how to heal. She believed that all healers should understand the nature of the pain that they might remove. To fully understand a wound, one must experience it completely, and therefore undergo the pain of such. All wounds healed would first be exacted upon the healer to give him or her total understanding of how awful the pain is, and how quickly they should react to those in need.  It was more than strange to have students’ arms broken or lacerations upon them during their classes.

Most of the students viewed her as unnecessarily cruel. They believed she did this to show her dominance as an instructor. When one brave soul voiced her opinion on this matter, Juarista swiftly drew a dagger and sliced her own belly open. The wince was the only betrayal of her pain, as she silently worked her magic upon the live recipient, bleeding profusely from her abdomen. Only when the recipient was fully healed did she use her magics to heal herself. The students in that particular class never said a word, only gasped, and never again did any student voice their resistance to her methods.

The Board of Regents’ brows were raised at her method of teaching, and her choice of attire was even stranger than her teaching style. She was seldom seen wearing anything but a full bodysuit made of black leather. Despite her slightly gaunt body, it was revealing nonetheless.

However, none could deny that those who studied under her learned to understand the healing arts faster and in more depth than with any other. She was cruel, and cold, but it served well to impart the necessary wisdom of Healing to the novices. And so the Board saw fit to let her continue with her work, however odd it may be.

Just five years ago, the Dean of the Royal College of Healing arts passed away of natural causes. He was seventy-eight years old and was extremely well respected at Lake Hollym. His ways were gentle and soft, and many believed he was void of a vicious bone in his body.

It was an ironic replacement to his position when Mother Juarista was appointed the seat. Those with interest in Lake Hollym were buzzing about the seemingly scandalous replacement. Mother Juarista, in her forties, was still as cold in her teachings as ever. It was widely whispered that she would not have been appointed such a well-respected position were it not for her deep political maneuvering within the Academy. Most believe this is only a stepping-stone for her and that she secretly wishes to attain the Regent’s seat.

However odd her mannerisms, teachings and attire may be, none can deny her devotion to the school, and the Kingdom. She is a tall, attractive middle-aged woman, with graying black hair, and steely gray eyes. Her gaze is piercing and tends to make others uncomfortable, even in casual conversation.

It is unclear why this woman has such strange teaching methods. There are many rumors as to what happened to her in her youth to make her so driven, cold and cruel. Whatever the reason, if there is one, it is undeniable that her revolutionary teaching methods have left their mark on the Royal Academy of Arcane Arts and Sciences, and as it seems, strengthened it.

Dame Fionella Bellflower,

Dean

Royal College of Alchemical Arts & Sciences

Lady Bellflower was born on September 15th 565 in Iron Spring, one of the small towns in the County of Blackstone. Her father Phillipe, was the town's alchemist. He was a retired adventurer that found love and decided to play it safe and settle down with his small fortune. Phillipe had done pretty well for himself then Spirit forged into an alchemist to ensure a stable career and provide a consistent income. He and his wife Emilia worked together in their modest shop providing all the necessary elixirs for the local people. Occasionally the local town guard would order a batch of gasses.

Phillipe originally took on the mantle of alchemist out of need to provide for his family but over time he grew to love it. He found much pleasure in experimenting with his equipment and reveled in discovering how to make new substances. He began to appreciate the subtle nuances in properly mixing elixirs for maximum potency. Phillipe's growing appreciation for the alchemical arts was also growing in his daughter.

Lady Bellflower spent many a day next to her father in the lab aiding as best she could. She was a natural. By the age of 8 she was capable of making some of the more complex elixirs and was starting to work with gasses. Gasses were her favorite, though one might expect a child to appreciate the colors or look of the gasses this was not the case with Lady Bellflower. They were her favorite because of the amazing complexity in which they were made. She would sit, eyes fixed to the connected beakers and tubes as the base materials were vaporized and condensed, suspended and separated, and finally pressurized and recondensed into the beautiful spheres. More amazing was her complete understanding of the processes that made the gas globes. Phillipe knew that his daughter was bound for greatness and nurtured her curiosity to the full extent of his ability.

By age 15 Lady Bellflower's understanding of the alchemical arts had surpassed her father's. By age 18 Lady Bellflower was working for the local Count as head of the Alchemist's Guild. She coordinated the mass production of the necessary supplies for the soldiers and Knights. She devised more efficient ways of quickly producing the gasses that she loved so. Her knowledge of alchemical substances coupled with her innovative thinking led to much praise from the local Nobles. What most impressed her Liege Lords was her attention to detail. There was not one single accident in her lab throughout all her service in Blackstone.

In 587 she was visiting Evendarr City as a special envoy of her Count when she met Lord Ansel MacKay, assistant Guild master of Alchemists for the Kingdom. They spoke of their respective professions and as the conversation progresses it was obvious that Lady Bellflower was exactly what Lake Hollym needed. She was offered a scholarship and graciously declined. Lord Ansel was not deterred, he went and spoke with her Count and requested her to attend Lake Hollym. Lord Ansel explained that with the potential that Lady Bellflower displayed in their conversation she could go on to do great things. The Duke agreed and requested of Lady Bellflower that she attend the classes. She agreed and started attending classes in the fall of 588.

She made it through one class of Advanced Alchemical Studies and requested to teach the next class. The professor arrogantly decided to placate her and allow her to teach as he assumed it would humble her to fail. By the end of the class the Professor admitted that he had actually learned a few new things. This was the beginning of her quick ascent. Lady Bellflower couldn't help but impress all who met her with everything she did. Usually this type of reaction would eventually consume one's humility and leave them as arrogant as the day is long. Not Lady Bellflower. She still to this day will be the
first to admit that she needs improvement and is always looking to learn. She is revered by her students as the best professor they have ever had. Her mix of professionalism and friendship with the students creates an atmosphere of comfort and a natural camaraderie that drives her students to great heights. She is truly one of Evendarr's brightest.

Lord Vaisillon Eannaril,

Dean

Royal College of Astrological Arts and Sciences

Lord Vaisillan Eannaril is known as one of the most meticulous and precise astrologers within the Kingdom of Evendarr. It is said that from an early age he had a love for stars that surpassed any bards’ most vivid songs of the like. He grew-up a normal boy and played Bandits and Magistrates like any other child, but when the moon rose, he was rarely seen. Though the scholarly arts were not his forte, the stars would keep his attention for hours. The parents are on record as wanting him to be a seasoned warrior, but proud of his accomplishments.

In 578 ER, Lord Vaisillan enrolled in the Royal College of Astrological Arts and Sciences, against the behest of his parents. Special arrangements were made with the academy and the 75th Assault Regiment to allow him to attend a reduced schedule do to his lack of financial support. His dedication to the 75th Assault Regiment offered him the respect of many within the Academy staff, but several of the students thought lesser of him because he was not able to pay the student fees out of pocket. Lord Vaisillan increased his rank within the regiment, and was known as a perfectionist by his peers and superiors. Every night he was seen in the observatory studying the great question and every morning he was on the field with his regiment.

Though Lord Vaisillon graduated from the Royal College of Astrological Arts and Sciences in 585 ER, he had already been teaching at the school for over a year. He taught for approximately 5 years until he was promoted to a research analyst position within the college. Lord Vaisillon retained his title of Professor, even though his role changed. Specifics are not known about the projects he worked on, but many accredit Lord Vaisillon for predictions of Royal significance. When questioned, Lord Vaisillon has always shrugged it off without concern.

593 ER, Lord Vaisillon was appointed Associate Dean of the Royal College of Astrological Arts and Sciences. Specifically he served as chief administrator in charge of Royal Portents. He took up the mantle of documenting the lineage and historical data around King Mykel II. Those documents are not for public viewing unfortunately. Many say that his work on the Royal portents was what won him the role as Dean, but those that have met and that have felt his intensity for the arts know that his drive for perfection is what earned him the title.

Lord Vaisillon’s Personal Motto - “To know one’s origin is to know one’s fate.”

This motto is burned onto a placard and hung on the door to his study for all to read.

Lady Chandria a'Vaughn,

Royal Guild mistress of Mages

Lady Chandria a’Vaughn was born near the Ducal Estate of Grunnid in the Duchy of Volta in 546 ER. The Vaughn family ran a small line of trading caravans, but their youngest daughter Chandria had no love of figures and money. Instead she would often take trips to the Ducal Estate to and sit near the Guild circles and listen to the masters’ talk and do business.

When she was twelve seasons, the guild master of mages in Volta finally took notice of the girl so desperate to learn and quietly began instructing her. Here and there, in brief moments of free time and longer days of winter, Chandria was taught to read, to use scrolls, and cast spells. By her eighteenth birthday, Chandria had joined the guild herself as a full fledged member.

From there it was just a matter of time, six years, before Chandria was sponsored to travel to Lake Hollym and take up duties under the Royal Guild of Mages. Excited to be in such a vibrant and interesting place as Janitria, she quickly took to exploring and learning as much as she could in her new home.

In the year 582 ER, Chandria had worked her way to the level of an Assistant Guild mistress when her predecessor, Lord Terrence Lethwinian, stepped down to tend to family matter in Quentari. Chosen as an interim Guild mistress, Chandria so impressed the King and Regents of Hollym with her dedication and skill that in 584 ER, the permanent position of Royal Guild mistress of Mages was hers.

Chandria is an enthusiastic scholar in the Celestial magics. She is ever striving to learn more and is known as a bright cheerful woman, always happy to entertain a visitor or discuss finer points of magical theory. She runs the Guild of Mages with kindness and fairness, making sure that all those below her know her appreciation for their efforts. Her optimistic and energetic approach to life lead many to underestimate her, but they often forget a simple fact, she is the Guild mistress of Mages in Evendarr and did not become so through stupidity, luck or ignorance and has sent more than one would be swindler home with burns across his backside.

Lord Stefan Vilkas,

Royal Guild master of Healers

Stefan Vilkas started off his career in the healing sciences by working his way through the Academy. From a mid-class family he needed to serve in the 75th assault regiment to help pay for his tuition. He married at an early age to Sophia Candle. Together they have three children, Bruce, Richard, and Daniel. Sophia passed away in 598.

Many consider Vilkas a family man. Always taking the time to spend with his sons no matter how busy his duties have become. Many of the younger people in the guilds view him as a stern father figure. One that you can imagine serving in the military for most of his youth.

His three sons are all accomplished in there own rights, and give all of the credit to their father.

Below follows some of the pertinent dates in Vilkas’ life.

Born in 519 in the Lowtown section of Evendarr City. Lowtown gets its name not because the city is in the poor district, the “Rain Gutter” holds that honor, but because it is the lowest district in Evendarr city. Lowtown is a nice enough area and is where most of the people of Evendarr city live. There are many quarters of Low Town based on the races that live there. From Lowtown looking off to the South is where the island that contains the Academy and the Guilds, Janitria.

In 524 Vilkas started his tutelage in the Healing Sciences by working in the local healers guild in Lowtown. He would bandage people’s wounds, and learned how to tell diseases and other maladies apart.

In 534 at the age of 15 he entered into the Royal Academy. One of the younger students, but by no means any less skilled. From working at the local guild, and having home schooling, Vilkas was able to restore the life of a dead person.

538 Meets Sophia Candle at the Royal Academy. Sixth months later they were married.

In 539 he joined the 75th assault regiment when his mother passed away. To help ease the burden off his father for the tuition.

540 Quickly moved to lieutenant in the 75th.

545 Becomes a Colonel in the 75th. His Natural charisma and leadership is no longer in question. He also graduates from the Academy with the highest honors. For the next 5 years he continues to serve in the 75th and gains many honors and recognition for his outstanding commitment to the job.

550 He retires from the 75th and begins to work in the Royal Guild of Healers

580 He takes the position of Royal Guild Master of the newly named guild, Royal Guild of Healers. The previous Guild Master left at the outlawing of necromancy.

585 Knighted to his Majesty.

598 His wife Sophia passes away of old age. He takes a month and a day leave to mourn. This is the first time he has taken any time off in his entire career.

604 Despite his older age Vilkas shows no signs of slowing down. He is well liked and respected by all the board of Regents, all the Deans of the colleges, and his fellow Guild masters.

Lord Ansel MacKay

Royal Guild master of Alchemists

It is said that Lord Ansel was born a human in the year 556 ER.  Not much is known of his early years, but it is rumored that he race changed to Hobling in 565ER and that it was a gift from his parents for his 9th birthday.  Records show that he left his family’s estate in 567ER to study the arts of celestial magic under private tutelage.  In 569 ER Lord Ansel enrolled in the school of Alchemical Arts at Lake Hollym.  Midway through his second semester, Lord Ansel joined the Royal Alchemists Guild.  In 571 ER Lord Ansel was race changed back to human.  In 574 ER Lord Ansel finished his education at Lake Hollym and dedicated his life to the Alchemical studies within the guild.

Lord Ansel worked his way up through the ranks of the guild and acquired the prestigious title of 1st Assistant Guild master of the Royal Alchemists guild in 578 ER, after the reigning guild master and his two assistants relieved their positions.  Over the next thirteen years, five other guild masters had seen their way through the Royal Guild.  In the winter of 591 ER Lord Ansel was promoted to head Guild master of the Royal Guild of Alchemists.

Many people would consider Lord Ansel a relaxed individual and very approachable.  Upon speaking to him, his passion for the alchemical arts is well understood.  Apprentices are often kept all night for discussions and theories professed by the Guild master.  Lord Ansel is renowned for the endless array of stories he tells.  He rarely leaves the lab, let alone the guild.  Though he has never created any new Alchemical substances, Lord Ansel conducted extensive research into the effects of Alchemy on the Sessai immune system.  Though he is not a standard professor at the Academy, on occasion he teaches classes or holds theory sessions/seminars.

*Note: Lord Ansel has changed to and from Human and Hobling race at least three times on record since his tenure began at the Guild.  As of 601 ER Lord Ansel has been a Hobling.

Lord Doremus Hendrikides

Royal Guild master of Astrologers and Sciences

No one seems to know the actual age of Lord Doremus. He has been the Royal Guild master of Astrologers and Sciences for over a half century now. His eyes are very deep set, blue as the sea, and his face is weathered and old looking. He is clean-shaven, with gnarly, wild white hair that sticks out at odd angles everywhere. He is an old man, almost sickly thin, but his energy seems boundless, and belies his weak appearance. His eyes always seem eager to see more than others do, seeking the mysteries of life or secrets one holds within themselves.

Probably the most unusual of the Royal Guildmasters, Lord Doremus is very casual, with a playful smile or an inappropriate joke never said at an appropriate time. He is most often found wearing deep midnight blue robes, and what look to be bed slippers. His focus seems never set on the unimportant such as his appearance, apparel, or propriety. He is far more interested in his work, and his work seems never-ending.

No man can deny his vast level of knowledge. He is well trained in the Arcane arts, studying mostly in the Celestial school. He has a small knowledge (as he would say) of the Earth Magics, though it is rumored that his ‘small knowledge’ is anything but humble.

It seemed he was at least middle-aged when he jovially took the Royal Guild master position from the previous Lord, who resigned to pursue his own personal interests. Lord Doremus was renowned for his expert knowledge in the prediction and understanding of the world through the reading of the stars, and he was certainly not a dunce with the arts of Alchemy and magic.

Still, his ways are strange to everyone except himself and perhaps those that wail to the moon. Most have thought him insane. It is said that most of his nights are spent alone in the Frostpeaks of Volta, simply staring blankly at the stars for hours and hours on end. His constant daydreaming and seeming inability to focus on any conversation without drifting off and looking up at the stars only serve to further fortify this rumor.

He has only one grandson that anyone knows of, though his boasting of former romances should add up to a larger line. His grandson is the only survivor of his immediate family killed in a vicious attack of undead over three years ago. It is believed that Lord Doremus’ son and Daughter-in-law were killed during the attack, but no bodies were ever found. Doremus’ grandson, Ahrimus, firmly insists that some creature of unspeakable power took them. Ahrimus is still quite young, and though his claims have not fallen on deaf ears, it is hardly a matter the guilds believe to be of any threat, including Doremus.

Ahrimus is enamoured by the character Lord Doremus continuously portrays himself as. He is the last relative of Lord Doremus, and whatever seriousness remains in the Royal Guild master is shown in his concern for his grandson. The young boy is often at the man’s side, and though Ahrimus seems to have little aptitude as of yet for magic, Lord Doremus boasts regularly that his family will hold the seat of the Royal Guild master for centuries to come, passing down to Ahrimus next.

Lord Doremus, although his artform is widely thought of as frivolous and time wasting, is well respected within the circles of Magic—in and outside the Academy. He is uncouth and at times seems quite insane, but his words are seldom lacking a deep-seated wisdom and lesson to them. He is a man with cryptic responses obfuscated by unabashed playfulness and joviality. And beneath it, if you are discerning enough, a map to the future is always hidden.

He is a man who seeks to make the world smile and relax more than they do. He seems a perfect offset to the many serious and stern masters of magic that rule the Academy.

Colonel Cedric Anthony Buttons,

Commander, 75th Assault Regiment

Cedric was born to the immensely influential Buttons family in 558 ER. As the sixth son of an offshoot branch of the family, Cedric chose to make a name for himself through independent service in the Army. Enlisting as a simple private in 573, Cedric endured through his service to eventually become a sergeant by 576.

At this time, Cedric was transferred to Volta for further training. Selected to serve on the wall, he was quickly noted among his men as preternaturally cold-blooded and precise with almost no deviation from proper military etiquette at all times despite the brutal conditions. Disliked and avoided as much as possible, he nevertheless demanded respect with ruthless determination and pure skill.

In 578, Sergeant-Major Buttons was transferred off the Wall and into the 75th Assault Regiment on the island of Janitria. A dramatic change in environment, the transfer ultimately placed Cedric simply in yet a different form of constant danger. Instead of undead, it was the creatures summoned onto the island who posed a threat.

The demands of the 75th were difficult as Cedric was placed in a special training program to learn the necessary magical skills required. With no natural aptitude for magic, he studied and applied himself with seemingly limitless stamina to complete the program. He served two year on Janitria as sergeant-major, commanding groups of men to respond to the threats inherent in a large school of magic.

It was in the summer of 580 that his methodical and unemotional approach to battle proved itself. A creature was summoned onto the island that was larger than any seen within the last seven generations of commanders. As “The Devourer” rampaged across the island with death and carnage in its wake, Cedric set up a small command center for disorganized troops. With icy calm he began reassembling the men into efficient response teams. He refused to allow any to rush out to confront the creature until his plan was developed and refined to a point where he believed it would succeed. It is rumored that he even performed a battlefield execution when a young corporal disobeyed orders and tried to rescue first year students.

Six hours after the summoning, the creature was contained and returned to a confinement circle. The casualties were enormous amongst the ranks, but the board of inquiry commended Sergeant-Major Buttons for his planning and leadership. After a final recommendation, Cedric was summarily promoted to Captain and assigned to the operations division of the command staff of the 75th Assault Regiment.

Years of loyal service and near flawless planning placed him as the Operations Officer of the 75th Assault Regiment, serving directly under Brigadier Morran Bartholomew-Saneth. In the early days of 604, Brigadier Morran was promoted to a General of the Army and sent to Evendarr City to join the King’s personal staff. In the interim, now Colonel Cedric Buttons has been placed in command of the Regiment, answering to Lord Robard Egmont.

Derros Scrivener Starstone,

Arch wizard of Magics Joining

Asst. Dean of the Royal College of Celestial Arts and Sciences

Asst. Guild master of Mages

Derros Scrivener Starstone was born in 357 E.R. in Evendarr city to a clan of
dwarves known for a tradition of learning, earth magic and scholarly persuit.
At the age of 35 he was granted admittance to Lake
Hollym and trained at the
Royal College of Earth Arts and Sciences. With hard work and determination he finished training in ten years and became a member of the Royal Healer's Guild. For the
next 54 years he worked as a guild member in Evendarr city and rose in rank
slowly but steadily, becoming known as a constant workaholic.
One day, however, on a trip to Janitria to do some research, he met a small child
who was enrolling in the College of
Celestial magic. That child, Mathias
Raveloch, inspired Derros to take up the study of Celestial Magics as well.
            Enrolling in the
College of Celestial Arts and Sciences for another 10 year course of study, he quickly became known as a talented and hardworking student with a surprising natural aptitude despite his race. During this time, he watched Mathis grow up and the two remained friends, lab partners, and fellow pranksters as Mathias began to show his eclectic sense of humor and Derros went along to make sure he didn't blow
himself into small pieces. Upon graduation Derros became a member of the
Royal Celestial guild as well and this time decided to remain at Janitria as
a professor and researcher.

As of 604 ER, Derros is a senior professor and Assistant Dean still at the
Celestial College, a part-time lecturer at the Earth
College, and is absorbed in research looking into the underlying connections between the schools of magic. He is also one of a number of assistant guildmasters of the Royal Celestial Guild and a senior guildmember in the Healer’s guild. Gruff still and occasionally brooding, he remembers fondly the past decades of pranks and schemes executed with his old friend but looks to the future as well and new discoveries. In the fall of 601, after many conversations with Dean Arcevol, he was chosen as the head of Lake Hollym's new plan to test and recruit wizards among the adventurers of Evendarr and allied kingdoms, the Arch Wizard Project.

Derros is considered the most influential member of Lake Hollym below the rank of board member. He is given tremendous latitude in research, administration, and teaching practices. He is known as strict, stern, dour, and uncompromising to his students, but possesses a wealth of knowledge and experience to impart.

In August of 602 amidst magical experimentation, Derros backlashed a formal magic and wound up race changed into a gypsy. Unfortunately, the backlash seems impervious to removal attempts so Derros resigned himself to waiting the year and a day until it finally faded and he became a dwarf once more. In the meantime, he had a job to do and ventured out despite the lack of beard. A local gypsy at Janitria adopted him for the year's duration so he was also known with the additional surname "Vasilokov" until the formal effect faded.

Daniel Redbrook,

Arch wizard of Lightning and Lore

Biography

Daniel Redbrook was born in 569 to a wealthy merchant house family in the upper class area of Evendarr City. By family tradition, the first child would grow to inherit the business, the second child would serve the kingdom, and the rest would help in the business as well. Daniel was the second child with an older sister Emilia, and three younger brothers Jakob, Erik, and Richard. With his early affinity for spellcasting, it was decided to train him as a wizard and thus fulfill his service as a member of the healer’s guild of Evendarr.

Following a series of private tutors, Daniel enrolled in the Royal College of Healing Arts and Sciences at the age of twelve, just one year after necromancy was outlawed Kingdom wide. There he excelled over the long ten years of study in the study of earth magic and its myriad of applications. Never a member of the 75th Assault Regiment as his family was able to pay for tuition, Daniel eschewed much of the practical side of the magical arts to delve even further into the theoretical.

In his 7th year of study, at the age of nineteen, Daniel attended a joint class on extra-planar cosmology and found a new focus of interest. From then on he studied as much as the Healing College would allow on extra-planar theory. Immediately after graduation he went straight into the College of Celestial Arts and Sciences to continue his education. Fortunately, previous coursework and private lessons enabled him to finish within eight years instead of ten.

Now twenty-nine, Daniel sought for and was granted a position on a research team operating within the Academy itself. He spent two years in intensive research of the mechanisms of extra-planar relationships before being brought into the Tyrran Cosmological Study because of his expertise and training. There he met and formed working and personal relationships with many of the archwizards across Avalon. When the study was completed and the results published, he was offered a position of full professor at the Academy.

Unfortunately, Daniel has had little time to teach classes as he was called away to advise His Royal Majesty for a few months in the spring of 603 on various magical affairs. It was only a month or two afterwards that he was assigned to the Evendarrian Army’s effort to retake the Duchy of Ashbury as primary magical advisor to the general.

As of the spring of 604, Daniel is within the borders of Ashbury, aiding the fighting as best he can. Not a frontline combatant by any means, he works mostly to combat High Magics of the Sessuar and to advise on the many phenomena to be found within the beleaguered duchy.

Philosophies, Attitudes, and Beliefs

Daniel Redbrook has been a loyal Evendarrian citizen his entire life. He was born and raised in Evendarr City and makes frequent trips home as well as occasionally being summoned to aid the nobles of the realm in magical deliberations. He is strict and stern about matters of protocol and etiquette and will brook no disrespect to a noble in his presence.

His years at Lake Hollym have bred a loyalty and love of the Academy and the system of producing the best arch wizards on Avalon. He is enthusiastic and excited about the opportunities available on the island of Janitria. In the short time he has been a full professor and the longer time he aided in teaching while attending his second college, he has gained a reputation for tough but fair teaching and an occasional tendency to ramble off on extra-planar tangents.

Hyram Young-Thunder,

Groundskeeper

Hyram came to the Island in the year 574 E.R after leaving the Shores of Minami. Some of his duties include cutting the grass, trimming the hedges, and getting rid of unwanted flora and fauna that make their way onto the island that are not worth the time of the 75th. He is a Hobling of short stature and unusual in that he has tattoos on his face and covering his arms.

Until his arrival the grounds of Janitria were taken care of by students who needed take a break from the rigorous training that they receive.

Since his arrival he has produced over 75 different and unique gardens on the island that he tends to daily. He came about the number 75 as a tribute to the 75th assault regiment.

On occasion he has also helped out students who have had trouble with some of there summoning spells. On one instance as he was up in a tree taking care of a bug problem, a student who summoned this nasty thing couldn’t keep it under control. The 75th was quickly dispatched to the scene and even had trouble taking care of this atrocious creature. Well since Hyram was already up in the tree, and the creature hadn’t taken notice of him yet. He broke a branch off the tree and smacked the creature over the head with it. Well, needless to say, It took care of the problem, and the student was very thankful (It was later quoted from the student “But Professor Mathias says he has them all over his house!”)

Teachers and Students often come and visit with him on the grounds for advice and counseling. Many to this day wonder what they would have done if it wasn’t for him. He has encouraged some of the best that the Academies put out, to stay in and not give up.

After his 30 years at the island, it is one of the most beautiful places to visit. The impressive features of the buildings are accented by the near perfect landscape.

Mathias Raveloch,

High Guild Master of Mages, Avendale

Mathias was born to a small family living within the city of Din-Oth in the Kingdom of Quentari. A child prodigy, he had mastered the reading of magical scrolls by the age of 4 and astounded the city with his casting of sleep spells by the age of 7. So taken with his natural ability, the elven nation contacted the Board of Regents of Lake Hollym and arranged for him to travel to Janitria to study with the College of Celestial Arts and Sciences at the tender age of 8.

While there, Mathias met a fellow student, Derros, who had decided on a second course of study in the Celestial College. The two became fast friends, though quite an improbable pair with Derros the dour older dwarf and Mathias the mischievous prankster child. Their exploits remain legendary to this day as Mathias excelled at getting trouble and Derros in getting out of it.

Upon graduation, Mathias remained on the island to continue his research into the nature and craftsmanship of golems. Quickly becoming a full professor of the Royal College of Celestial Arts and Sciences, his eccentric and hands-on approach to teaching quickly earned him the admiration and enthusiasm of his students.

Now a Professor Emeritus of the Royal Academy of Arcane Arts and Sciences on Lake Hollym in Evendarr, Mathias Raveloch came to Avendale in 598. Having recently retired in 583 after almost 60 years of service teaching in that institution, Professor Raveloch sought to travel his retirement away. The then 102 year old Raveloch found that retired life did not suit him, and that he longed to teach once more. After a short time, he began teaching in a more minor capacity at the Avendale Royal Academy in Avendale City. He was greatly respected for his knowledge of the celestial arts, and taught a very popular course "Golems and You: A discourse on celestial constructs".

In the winter of 601, Mathias once more retired from teaching, but quickly found again, that retired life bored him.  His reputation as a professor and master of the celestial arts preceded him, and he was asked to take the job of Assistant Guild master of the Avendale City Mage's Guild by the then newly appointed High Guild master Lyonesses.  With the restructuring of the royal guilds he has been promoted to High Guild master. With his elevation to High Guild master, Mathias prefers to give his guild masters free reign to run their guilds as they see fit with only occasional intervention.

In early 602, Mathias was contacted by his old friend Derros, and together they designed the Tests of Arch Wizardry for the Lake Hollym Arch Wizard Project. Following that, Mathias occasionally administers the Tests himself and offers his unique household as a staging ground for them.
